Program Not Responding
You've probably been casually browsing the internet (or doing something else on your PC) when you suddenly get the “program not responding” message. It's an aggravating problem that most, if not all, PC users experience at one time or another. Some PC users experience this problem often. While the occasional “program not responding” problem is not thought to be serious, a chronic problem with a program not responding is not considered normal. If your PC is experiencing such problems on a regular basis, there are some things you can do to stop the problem from happening.
Causes for Program Not Responding
There is no single cause for a program to stop responding. Many different things, ranging from hardware problems within the PC to software issues, can cause the program not responding message to appear. How you stop the problem will depend on what the cause of it is.
What Can I Do to Exit the Program?
If the program is not responding, it's obviously of no use to you. To exit the program immediately, press ctrl, alt and delete all at once. This will open the Task Manager. Under “Applications” select the program which is not responding. Then click “end task”. This should close down the program that has frozen.
What Can I Do to Fix the Problem?
As we previously mentioned, how you fix the problem will depend on the cause. Try the following quick fixes to stop the program not responding message from occurring.
- Check Windows Update for essential updates. A lot of program not responding problems are fixed by a simple Windows update. Make sure your PC is up to date on all the latest Windows Updates.
- Update Java. Much of the internet nowadays is powered by Java. If your computer is suddenly freezing while on a particular site that happens to run Java, chances are your version of Java is outdated. Go to Java's web site (java.sun.com ) and update Java frequently.
- Install Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware Programs. Viruses and spyware are also known to cause a PC to lock up. If you install an anti-virus program, such as AVG, plus an anti-spyware program, such as Spybot S&D, you can prevent spyware and viruses from wreaking havoc on your PC.
- Clean the Inside of the PC. After months or years of use, the inside of a PC can get quite dirty. If you open up your PC and notice that there is a lot of dust on the fan or any other area, you should take the time to adequately clean out the area (use can air for this). Keeping the inside of your PC clean can help prevent the program not responding message.
- Use ATFCleaner to Clear Browser Cache. After a bit of time, browser cache can build up and slow the PC down. If you clear your browser cache (and temporary internet files) once per month by using the ATFCleaner tool, you can keep this problem from occurring.
