Repair Windows
Windows isn't perfect. One of the biggest beefs many PC users have had with the Windows operating systems are that they are prone to errors. These errors are a problem not just for the beginner user, but also the advanced user.
Thankfully, the vast majority of Windows errors can be repaired. That's because Windows allows for the fact that errors will occasionally occur. Thus, things like configuration settings, files and registry information are all backed up. If something should happen, Windows can be reverted back to the last good settings. In this article, we'll give you a guideline for repairing Windows.
System Restore
Anytime a new program is installed on the computer, Windows automatically creates a restore point. This restore point can be used should something go wrong with the computer. If you've noticed that your PC has started acting up after installing software, you can try to go back to the restore point before the install.
To access system restore, go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Then, simply choose a system restore point and proceed. Within 15 minutes, the PC should revert back to the restore point, and if the software was your problem, you'll be good to go. Please remember, though, that when you restore, you lose any programs installed after the restore point. So back those up if you need to.
Last Known Good Configuration
If you don't want to do a full system restore, you can try using the last known good configuration. This is particularly a good idea if you don't think the problem is related to software. To access the last known good configuration, reboot the PC and press F8 at the startup screen. Go down to “last known good configuration” and hit enter.
Recovery Console
The recovery console is usually used as a last ditch attempt at fixing a broken Windows operating system. As such, you should try the other suggestions above before using it. To access the recovery console, all you must do is insert your Windows operating system CD. Then follow the steps listed on screen. If all goes well, your Windows operating system will be repaired.
