Runtime Error
You're about to boot up your favorite program on the PC and you suddenly get the dreaded “runtime error” message. Has your program failed? Not necessarily. Sometimes there are other causes for the runtime error. Among these are software, memory and virus/spyware issues. We'll cover each of these as well as how to fix the error in this article.
The Software Error
In the case of the software error, the program is to blame. This commonly occurs after a patch has been installed on Windows, which causes the Operating System to reject the program. To counter-act this problem, many software publishers are releasing patches of their own to ensure that their program will work with a patched copy of Windows.
How to Fix
To fix this problem, you'll simply go to the developer's web site and look around for any patches that are said to fix whatever runtime error problem you are having. If there are no patches/updates or the patch does not work, you may want to try uninstalling and then reinstalling the program.
The Memory Error
Memory is a very precious thing on any PC. Some programs are known to be “memory hogs”--that is, they eat up a lot of memory. As a result, other programs have a difficult time running. When a program cannot run at all, you will encounter the runtime error.
How to Fix
A quick fix is to close down the least essential, most memory hogging program you have open. (hint: you can check how much memory is being used by opening the task manager by pressing ctrl, alt and delete at the same time) This will allow the program you want to boot to have enough memory to load. A more permanent (and better) fix is to upgrade your memory so that you have enough of it to go around for your programs.
The Virus/Spyware Error
Viruses and spyware can literally paralyze a PC. They, too, can cause runtime errors. Luckily, they are very simple to fix—provided you get the right tools to fix them.
How to Fix
An easy fix is to download a program such as AVG and run a complete scan with it. AVG is able to catch and heal most viruses. You'll also want to grab an anti-spyware program like SpyBot S&D or AdAware Personal Edition and run a complete scan with that. As long as you don't have too nasty of a virus, these programs should be able to eliminate the virus and thus correct the runtime error.
